Description
The SPEX SamplePrep 6870 Freezer/Mill is a cryogenic impact mill for grinding tough and temperature-sensitive samples. Using liquid nitrogen, it cools materials until they become brittle, allowing effective pulverisation of samples that resist conventional milling. A magnetically driven steel impactor grinds the material inside a closed vial, which remains immersed in liquid nitrogen throughout the grinding cycle. This helps limit heat-related changes while containing the sample and reducing the risk of cross-contamination. Suitable materials include plant and animal tissue, bone, hair, seeds, polymers and food products.
Touchscreen controls allow users to programme pre-cooling time, grinding cycles, impact rate and cooling intervals. Additionally, the instrument stores up to ten grinding programmes, making established methods easy to recall. Depending on the vial and holder fitted, the 6870 accommodates one large vial, one medium-sized vial or up to four small vials. This flexibility supports both individual samples and simultaneous processing of smaller quantities. Safety features include a lid interlock and a liquid nitrogen level sensor, which stops operation when the coolant level becomes too low. The mill supports sample preparation for molecular biology, pharmaceutical analysis, forensic testing and materials research.
